Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation Supports Groundbreaking CRB1 Research by Dr. Peter M.J. Quinn
The Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation (CRBF) is proud to support the innovative research of Dr. Peter M.J. Quinn, a leading scientist dedicated to developing treatments for CRB1-related retinal diseases. His groundbreaking work is paving the way for potential therapies that could restore vision for individuals affected by Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
Advancing Research for CRB1-Related Retinal Disease
As an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Quinn leads PrimeSight Lab, where he and his team study CRB1-related retinal dystrophies using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived retinal organoids. These lab-grown mini-retinas allow researchers to closely examine how CRB1 mutations lead to vision loss and to test potential treatments before they move to clinical trials.
Gene Therapy and CRISPR Technology
Dr. Quinn’s lab is at the forefront of gene therapy research for CRB1-related vision loss. His team is exploring cutting-edge CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology, specifically using adenine base editors, to correct CRB1 mutations at the DNA level. These promising advancements could lead to groundbreaking therapies capable of restoring retinal function.
He has investigated the use of prime editing to correct prevalent CRB1 mutations in patient-derived iPSC lines, demonstrating the potential of this approach in developing therapies for CRB1-associated retinal dystrophies.Â
Additionally, Dr. Quinn’s research includes evaluating base editing and prime editing strategies for the ten most frequent CRB1 variants, which account for a significant portion of reported cases. This work assesses the feasibility and potential of these gene editing techniques as alternatives to gene augmentation therapies.Â
Through these efforts, Dr. Quinn aims to advance the understanding of CRB1-related retinal diseases and develop effective therapeutic strategies to address them.
Our Commitment to a Cure
The Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation is dedicated to accelerating research that brings real hope to families affected by CRB1-related blindness. By funding Dr. Quinn’s pioneering work, we are investing in the future of retinal disease treatments, ensuring that promising discoveries move closer to clinical application.
With every breakthrough, we move one step closer to our ultimate goal: a cure for CRB1-related blindness.
